During the lecture, we will embark on a journey through time to look at two tragic moments in human history. We will go back to August 1945, when, in the shadow of World War II, two devastating atomic mushroom clouds appeared over the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. We will learn about the military and political circumstances that led to the decision to use this then new technology of death. We will be introduced to the accounts of survivors, the so called hibakusha, as an important source of knowledge about the nature and scale of the destruction, as they experienced it first-hand. We will discuss the legacy of radiation and the trauma that marked Japan and the world, as well as post war international politics and the emphasis on nuclear arms control obligations.
