Is it a coincidence that Mieczysław Wojnicz’s arrival at the sanatorium in Görbersdorf coincides with a certain mysterious death? Why everybody willingly talks about every other topic here, but not about missing people? What are the residents of the Guesthouse for Gentlemen afraid of? A young patient hesitantly enters a territory occupied by men convinced of their wisdom. After all, every meeting, where Schwärmerei liqueur is lavishly served, is a perfect opportunity to discuss art or philosophy, and ultimately the superiority of men over women. Meanwhile, the gravestones in the nearby cemetery turn out to be disturbingly similar. Perhaps all tirades are merely an attempt to conceal the fear of a mysterious force responsible for the death floating in the air? The clock is ticking, the forest surrounding the sanatorium is getting more and more ominous, the first November full moon is approaching, the damp air is permeated by the stench of decay, and Wojnicz still doesn’t know why all eyes (not only those of humans) are on him... And why is that disturbing voice coming out of every possible nook and cranny? Has anyone else heard it? Where should one look to see the hidden face of the local landscape?
The theatrical adaptation of Olga Tokarczuk’s first novel after the Nobel Prize is an excellent opportunity to reflect on what we really know about the world and what remains beyond our sight. The director and author of the adaptation, Robert Talarczyk, draws on the Nobel Prize winner’s ‘natural horror’ to look into where our most dormant fears lurk.
To say that Empuzjon in the theatre is a story lined with horror drawing on the inexhaustible forces of nature, where the feminine elements slumber, is actually to say nothing. […] Rather, the authors of the production set out to tell the story of Mieczysław Wojnicz […] in a slightly different dimension, introducing a mood of mystery, horror, uncertainty.
Wojciech Lipowski / „Śląsk”
Silhouettes emerge from the twilight or disappear in it, becoming an element of a painterly vision, like in the expressionist paintings of Kirchner or Kokoschka. The effect is enhanced by Wojtek Doroszuk’s visualisations projected onto transparent surfaces. At times, the figures on their backgrounds become characters in a shadow theatre. The suggestive visual layer is subordinated to every element of the performance.
Małgorzata Jęczmyk-Głodkowska / „Z pierwszego rzędu”
[…] everything comes together as it should. The acting, stage design, costumes, lighting and music create a coherent picture that fits the narrative of the novel adaptation. The story of the patients of the Görbersdorf sanatorium in 1913 […] wrapped up with a criminal plot draws the viewer into its world like a well-written detective story.
