Just as Andean women weave their quipus out of ropes and knots to commemorate something, Argentinian artist Tiziano Cruz takes a journey back to his childhood to reconnect with his community.  He confronts us, and presumably himself, with what, in exploring the world of theatre, he has distanced himself from – his indigenous culture, his family, the customs, the traditions associated with living in a small community, in the face of nature, in harmony with it and in humility towards it. The performance features video footage documenting his return to his home village, his reunion with his father, his journey with him to the mountains. The performance offers a reflection on how racial hierarchies and structures of domination operate in a world where neoliberalism brutally destroys cultural and collective traces. Tiziano Cruz captivates with the power of his stage presence, moving with the story of himself – a man suspended between very different worlds. “Wayqeycuna” is the final work in a trilogy in which the artist combines his childhood memories in northern Argentina with political manifestos about the art market and class privilege.

The show is preceded by a workshop entitled “Bread for the World’ (“Pan para el mundo”), during which, among other things, the bread that subsequently appears in the performance is prepared.

The performance was presented as part of last year’s Avignon Theatre Festival and La Bâtie-Festival de Genève, among others.
