It was another grey and sad day in Zagłębie region. There was no sign that it could get any worse... When a private detective, tired of life, receives a mysterious assignment to find Silesians who have unexpectedly – a very poor joke – gone underground, he does not yet understand that in a moment he will become a witness to the most important events in the history of the world... Well, certainly in the history of the region. Before that happens, however, he will have to traverse fog-shrouded Katowice – a city full of dangers such as orcas, hungry mines, gummies and coal. Ah... Well, not exactly. Because there’s no coal either...

We invite you to another play built across borders after Sosnowiec’s “Nikaj”. Can Zagłębie region inhabitants live without Silesians? Who are we when we have no one to differ from? According to the creators of the play, director Jacek Jabrzyk (director of the Zagłębie Theatre) and author of the text Przemysław Pilarski (winner of the Gdynia Drama Award): “The plan is for love to prevail. The most renewable source of energy”.

The Zagłębie//Silesia project is part of Zagłębie Theatre’s coherent socio-cultural strategy, integrating artistic activity with civic activity, the world of theatre with the inhabitants’ everyday experience. By exploring the theme of local culture and history, we are building a positive sense of identity and pride in the traditions of the space we inhabit together in Silesia and the Zagłębie region. At every stage of the project, we refer to the complex, multinational history of the places we inhabit. This is because the most important element of our project is to use artistic tools in a way that helps to express real, current problems of the community which is the audience of the theatre.

The play qualified for the 29th National Competition for the Exhibition of Polish Contemporary Art.

Przemysław Pilarski, playwright, winner of the Gdynia Drama Award and author of this tragifarce, combines historical puzzles, adding elements of farce, vaudeville, theatre of the absurd and grotesque heavily sprinkled with fantasy.

It can be added that the performance is saturated with a huge number of quotations, references to literature, music, art, pop culture, contextual games providing a large dose of fun, so we get a dynamic, phantasmagorical melting pot of extremely relevant issues. This is followed by a mixture of genres and forms.

Wojciech Lipowski, Śląsk

The role of the detective is masterfully played by guest actor Michał Majnicz – he is at once strong and sensitive, brilliant and confused, and begins the performance with a rousing parody of “The Howl”.
