The old world has died and the new one is still not in sight. There is no going back, but it is also impossible to take a step forward. We wallow in the fumes of suffocating helplessness. Can we still hope for the birth of the new? Of breaking out of this weakness? Or will we remain forever in this indefinable space between? Where we will be greeted by Alois Humbel, the Silesian man without qualities, and his demons. Or are they our demons? Maybe it is the community of the weak, of which we are a part, that holds the key to this story. The story of a man with no identity, no strength, no potential for change. The story of a man who needs dependence and a sense of subjugation like air. The story of a slave.

Do you think you are better because you have control over your life? He thought so too…

Please note that strobe lights and smoke generators are used in the performance.

The play is taking part in the 28th National Competition for the Staging of Polish Contemporary Art.

„Humbel” at the Stanisław Wyspiański SilesianTheatr e in Katowice is a visually beautiful and brilliantly acted theatrical story about the search for identity, the eternal sense of alienation and the complicated history of Silesia.

Magdalena Mikrut-Majeranek, teatrologia.pl

An adaptation of Twardoch’s latest novel, made on a grand scale and using strong

means, about a man who belongs nowhere and has no qualities. It is a story about how easy it is to change masks and impersonations and about the search for identity,

immersed in local, Silesian themes and in scenographic dirt that leaves traces like coal.

Przemysław Gulda, Gulda poleca

Henryk Simon invited to play this role is second to none.
