THE PLAY’S PATH

GOD OF CARNAGE

It just has happened. When two teenagers began a dispute which one of them is a snitch, a boy lost his teeth in a brawl. Their parents, the Houlliés and the Reilles, decided to solve the problem and end boys’ catastrophe in civilised way. Reza’s French modern play is great acting challange and studium in hypocrisy much more dangerous than that of "Morality of Madame Dulska", Polish turn-of-the-century play by G. Zapolska. What will happen when people even once say in public they have enough of pretending at a push that they love their fellow human being when all this has only one aim - not to spoil the idyllic mood and to preserve good manners?

Reza’s play quickly conquered the world. In West End production one could see Ralph Fiennes, in French one (at Theatr Antoine), directed by authoress herself, played Isabelle Huppert. "The Guardian" or "The Times" severe critics awarded Reza’s title five or four stars. The play was staged also in Schauspielhaus in Zurich, in Berliner Ensemble or at Broadway. R. Polanski was so impressed he made film version, titled simple "Carnage". Played Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet, Christopherem Waltz and John C. Reilly.

MEDIA ON THE PLAY

The drama binder of the play is irony or even derision. Both means of expression amuse at first, then hurt. And much more accurately hit the audience than essentially innocent farce.

"Dziennik Zachodni"

That what Zapolska has written about the Dulskis morality in 1906 was nothing compare to 21st century description of civilised western society shown by Reza. On the list of sins are contempt, hatred and well camouflaged duplicity. Protagonists little by little give up their socially imposed roles and the worst human incarnations crawl out from under their mask. Reza at first beguile us with middle-class comedy to show in finale a situation bordering on a gory tragedy.

"Gazeta Wyborcza"

Great value of Katowice performance is excellent acting. Outstanding Barbara Lubos-Święs as Veronique, Violetta Smolińska as Annnette. Their partners are Grzegorz Przybył – Alain and Andrzej Warcaba – Michel. They create real suspense on stage, effect of everyday unpleasantnesses and suppressed grudges.
