Birds in love, coming to life dummies, erotic tensions, slicky counter-jumpers and family stories. And all that registered on old recorders tapes laying on shelves, waiting to be heard. In some forgotten shop work three women. They – as antique Parcae or Shakespearean Witches – stand guard of human stories. To them you come to sell memories… So decided to do some tired of life man, who with his history tries to mythologize everydayness. Oneiric story torn between life and death, one of the most importants Bruno Schultz’s works "The Street of Crocodiles" [lit. translated as "Cinnamon Shops"], adopts and directs for us Ingmar Villqist.
Poetic beauty of a text was rendered in the performance. Due to actors’ work who give the lines with great emotions, tone, precision of gestures. Barbara Lubos, Violetta Smolińska, Anna Kadulska who impersonate several characters and Adam Bauman as Józef-Jakub express every nuance of an obscure but written in brilliant Polish language Schulz’s prose.
Actresses masterly field difficult parts of a text. Violetta Smolińska, Anna Kadulska and Barbara Lubos go out of their way on stage evoking one hundred-old world (…) The Crocodile Streets are rather drifting toward an artistic experiment then built on stage a created world, one a spectator can submerge into. And if they do, then in a most difficult way, only with words spoken beautifully by the actors of this performance of a memory and disturbing but very enticing sounds created by Olo Walicki responsible for the sound setting of the performance.
The most interesting effect is done when actors are close to the audience, and their voices come from the other place of a stage, sometimes from very far. Apart from an experiment with actors’ voices tone important is also a background sound of the performance, created by Olo Walicki. It’s made of music fragments and different acoustic effects strengthening drama of told stories.
