FUNNY OLD MAN

"I think the day I’d realised I wouldn’t ever be Napoleon was the most important one in my life. Then only vegetation began".

"Funny Old Man" by T. Różewicz it’s a puckish comedy in two acts for years performed by outstanding actors throughout Poland. Title old man is on retire, he works part-time as a guide in Monuments Administration. He has neither family, nor friends, lives lonely with a dummy instead of a woman, with puppets instead of children. No one knows why he has been accused and why his case is in court… A long monologue about unfulfilled life will tell in Chamber Stage Bernard Krawczyk, Silesian theatre and film legend, an actor uncessently taking up the artistic challenges. Monodrama is directed by E. Wyskoczyl.

The performance is produced in co-production with Teatr Współczesny in Wrocław, and belongs to events of Wrocław residency of European Capital of Culture. Goal of the theatre project wtw://strefy_kontaktu 2016_koprodukcja is to show Wrocław phenomenon as a city where were borne and realised important works of Polish contemporary drama – of H. Kajzar, T. Karpowicz and T. Różewicz – and an attempt of picking up and developing this tradition through initiating of playwrighting.

MEDIA ON THE PLAY

On Teatr Śląski in Katowice boards almost every week happens something extraordinary. For one hour and more Bernard Krawczyk, Katowice stage doyen, spins some lost old man’s exhausting monologue larded with extreme emotions. (…)

Nonetheless he seems to be fulfilled and happy with this role. And we watching the actor’s effort become aware that being an actor isn’t such a simple matter at all. That acting – besides beatifully recitation – is above all physical work, that of the body. Bernard Krawczy denudes himself here before us, but in symbolical way. He shows that he’s advanced in age and the body isn’t obiedient to him. But at the same time together with director he found the way to outwit it to some degree. Respect for the decision to play this part, Mister Bernard.

"Gazeta Wyborcza"

"Funny Old Man" is a performance that makes audience rethink some matters and show that when we consider perfroming on stage not only young actors staff has something to say but it’s worth remember old masters, who played their parts on more than one stage and still are fully ready to charm audience with their acting craft.
